Of all the seeds I sowed last month the tomatoes, peas, pumpkin and mallow are up. The rest are refusing to budge, However, I'll keep looking after them and hopefully we will see them germinate.
I finished off cutting our deciduous hedge when the weather initally dried up, and shredded it all. Last years shredding heap has been well worked by the chickens and is looking brilliant. They have also done a good number on the compost heap, and have now transferred to working the growing shredding and compost heaps.
We have also been repairing fences and gates to try and keep animals where they should be.
The chickens have divided into two clear groups a group of three who are well feathered and clearly the dominant pack. The other two, who are the newest are a bit bedraggled and have been pecked by the dominant trio. We have therefore, covered the sores in purple spray to stop them being pecked, chickens will peck voraciously at blood, and split them up. Yet again I am grateful for having the two runs.
The bees are now working well and it is warm enough to have a look in. I'm not sure but I may have come out of the winter with three colonies, I'll check over the next few days.
The greenhouse is growing kale and salads outside we have leeks and rhubarb.
Three weeks ago we were fortunate enough to be invited to Wiston Lodge in Lanarkshire to do a talk about our project to the Scottish Solar Group. It was a great morning and lots of good questions and suggestions. As ever we came away with atleast as much as we gave.
I also went back to Wiston yesterday to try my hand at sourdough bread. I love the flavour of it but have never managed to make it. It was a very hands on day but great for learning and came home with some wonderful bread.
Hopefully the good weather will continue this week and allow us to get the garden on a good footing for the summer.
