We have also ordered the wood for the raised beds on the allotment, it should be ready to be put in next week. I have been busy unpicking the stitching on bulk bags to use them as weed block for the allotment paths. It isn't a slow job though it can be a bit fiddly. A lovely job to do sitting on the front door step sheltered from the wind in the sunshine.
Last Thursday afternoon we got a phone call to say our first lot of chicks for this year had arrived, and were ready to be collected. I went off to get them and my husband took all the bits and pieces up to my mothers, she keeps them during the indoor stage of their life, once they are feathered they move into our garden. Despite having been to the animal food store twice recently I hadn't picked up any chick crumb. When I went that night it was all out of date, though just by a matter of weeks. I then went to the local pet store who also stock chick crumb, theirs ran out in October 2010! So I'll need to order some in.
Over the weekend I laid the insulating underlay in one of the two rooms it is going in. This room is now fully insulated under the floors and has had all it's gaps filled, round pipes, under skirtings etc. To lay the underlay we needed to empty the room of all furniture and carpet, before lifing up the old underlay which had disintegrated, clean up the mess, tape the gaps between the floor boards, put silicone around the bottom of the skirting boards, cut and lay the underlay, re-lay the carpet and put all the furniture back. The problem was once we got the room empty I realised what a mess the walls were, unfortunately they had been painted with matt paint rather than vinyl silk so when I tried to wash them the paint came off as well. Cue a quick paint of the room, same colour but in vinyl silk so it is washable. We got this all done by Sunday night BUT the door won't close because the new underlay is so thick. So I will need to get the joiner to take a bit off the bottom of the door next time he is in
I did a seed sowing session with one of the local nursery schools last week. Today one of the dads who had been there came up to me to say the seeds had started to germinate, and the kids were really excited! Great. Our seeds are also coming on, the tomatoes from the first sowing are up, as are the ones from the second sowing, it will be interesting to see if it will make any difference as they grow. None of the aubergines, cucumber or pepper seeds are up, though the aubretia and nicotinia are germiating, despite the kitten thinking they are a lovely place to sleep!!!!
