Last week I re insulated 16m of heating pipes, this took so long that the under floor insulation itself didn't get done. Whilst doing this I struggled with keeping the house warm. The boiler didn't seem to be able to get the water up to temperature what ever I did. I cleaned the flue and the boiler with no effect. On speaking to the installer he felt that the system needed to be serviced and talked me through the steps needed. So last Friday night we took the boiler to bits, cleaned it out and put it back together again. it was remarkably straight forward to do and made a miraculous difference to the heating system. I guess it will make it much more efficient as well.
I also have planted a variety of seeds for later in the year. Some are the usual annuals othersare perenials such as rhubarb and some are more unusual perenial foods such as Plum Yew and Mahonia. It is all part of an experiment to grow more perenials for food and to grow more foods that are happy in a shady spot as behind the house, to the north can be very shaded during the winter.
With regard to holidays we went to the Outdoor Show at the Scottish Exhibition Centre last week to try and work out the trailer camper we wanted. To our surprise, and dismay, the one we thought we wanted was too caravan like for us. The smaller one seemed much more our thing, but they only fitted a toilet in it this year. So it would be buying new. We thought about it for 48 hours and took the kids to have a look. They felt the same, so as it is a long term investment and reduces our holiday footprint we bought it. You can rationalise anything but we have always said we aren't trying to live with hairy shirts. Time will tell.
On a lighter note when my husband opened up the brochure he found that the Energy Saving Trust's advert had me on it. Several people have commented on it. It feels very strange to look at yourself in an advert. I didn't even know it was happening.
Enjoy the school holidays if you have them.
