This weekend was the kid's September weekend. On Tuesday we headed up to Fife, near Anstruther, to Kellie Castle and Gardens. Unfortunately, the castle was closed but we had a lovely 3 hours picnicing on their meadow, walking through their walled garden - charting all their apple trees so we can cross reference them with our list from Adam's Apples, sitting in their bird hive watching Chaffinches, Goldfinches and Sparrows. Finally, the kids spent half an hour on their adventure playground. It was a great day and I think I'm glad the Castle was closed as I don't think we would have had time to do that as well. A great day out for the family.
Thursday afternoon we had one of the engineers from British Eco - a renewable energy firm - out to discuss solar hot water. He had a good depth of knowledge and talked us into a smaller system as he felt the pre-heating of water for the air source heat pump would cause problems for the heat pumps monitoring systems.
On Friday I attended a meeting for schools run by the Health Improvement Team looking at fruit and veg growing in schools with the hope of developing on to the idea of eating being a social activity around a table rather than refueling and then finally they will move on to food waste. This is for me a two way street. I learn and an delighted to support them in their aims.
Sunday was the AGM of our smallholders group - Borders Areas Smallholders. AS I have said elsewhere we live in West Lothian and aren't really smallholders. However, BASH is very much about mutual support and sharing of information. So as long as you have an interest and are working the land in some way they are happy to take us on. I am just setting up a website for them so you can see more I'll let you know when it is up and running.
