Saturday I went into Edinburgh for an Intensive Bike Maintainance Course with the Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative. I had decided to take my own bike, on the train and cycle. I have never taken a bike on a train before, and Scot Rails website mentioned little about it so I decided to "wing it". When the train came in the guard showed me which coach had the bike racks in. I had to lift the back wheel onto a hook at about head height, and strap the bike in. At Edinburgh Waverley I waited till everyone was passed before I took it down in case I dropped it. I needn't have worried it came down very smoothly. I then cycled across Edinburgh to the Bike Co-op. I felt like an old woman with everyone going passed me, it wasn't till I cycled my maintained bike back 8 hours later that I realised the bike had been so gummed up that it had been slowing me down. I was early, and the shop doesn't open till ten, when the course starts. So I locked my bike and went for a walk.
It was a women only course, which as I had never fixed a puncture I felt was probably better. As it turned out there were four of us, usually six but two had cancelled. We were all of a similar age and competence. During the day, we learn't how to remove both wheels and tyre, mend a puncture, adjust the brakes and gears, remove and replace the chain and pedals and much more. It was an excellent day and ahs resulted in me tidying the garage so I can maintain all our bikes. I have also asked Santa for a bike maintainance stand to help. Hopefully Santa will be kind.
