Carpets

I have a real problem with replacing floor coverings. Firstly, what is tough enough to cope with our dogs and kids, soft enough for the family to walk on, with minimal carbon foot print and that doesn't off gas.
My parents recently had some new carpets put in and the smell off them lasted weeks, I hate to think what they were giving off.
The result is that we have changed very few of our floor coverings. The kitchen has been retiled, it was getting dangerous, the hall is beautiful quality parquet, laid when the house was built. Unfortunately the wood is soft and marks easily so it has been covered in a carpet donated to us 10 to 15 years ago. This carpet is now thread bare and needs replaced. Infact, it has needed replaced for a few years but we couldn't find anything suitable.
Recently, we went to a well establised importer of hand made carpets from Persia (Iran) for a look. These carpets are made using traditional methods and many of them are not new, they have been made for the family tent and then sold on when there is a new carpet to replace it. Once cleaned and dried they look as good as new and I believe are very hard wearing. The disadvantage is the upfront costs, but for a carpet likely to out live us it is a good investment.
