When my husband and I first bought a flat we couldn't afford new furniture and so we collected cast off furniture from friends and family as it became available. Some of it had been well used but it was what we had.
When we moved out of our flat to the house we now live in we had much more space, the flat would have nearly fitted into our current livingroom! This meant we could, and needed to, collect more of people's cast off furniture, some of which we kept some of which we handed on to people more in need than us. This has lead to an eclectic collection of furniture, some with wonderful history. Our kitchen chairs were my grandmother's, the solid oak kitchen table belonged to a friend who was moving house, it had been made from the oak beams of a church that was being knocked down.
We have not only collected furniture, pans that don't work on induction hobs, a freezer, televisions and so it goes on with family donations.
This gives us a lovely homely, comfortable feel to the house.
It is important though, and sometimes tricky, to make sure the house doesn't become cluttered! Ours did. but gradually we are reducing that by handing things on again to others in need.
